Today we are pleased to offer a wonderful vintage Pony Skin handbag. Although these bags are referred to as Pony Skin they are also called Pony Hair leather, Pony Fur, Haircalf, Calf-Hair or Hair-on-leather. This material is usually created from cow or goat hide. It is made from the hair side of the hide, whereas most leather is made from the non-hair side. The pelt is shaved so that it resembles the hide of a horse and then dyed to create the desired pattern. It is the preferred material of Stuart Weitzman, credited with making the most expensive shoes in the world, and it is used by Leona and Hanna Erziak for their world-famous bags. This is a large rectangular bag, measuring 14″ w x 10″ h x 4″ d, with a goldtone metal frame and clasp closure. It has a short 18″ strap and a soft leather lined interior. The interior features three pockets: one with a zipper closure, one with a snap closure and one open. Done in a beautiful shade of medium brown with white “spots.” We believe this bag was made in Italy and dates to the 1960s. Bag is in very good, used, vintage condition. The is slight discoloration to the goldtone metal elements of the bag which may polish up. The interior has a few stains on the very bottom. There is a pocket inside with a metal snap which does not fully close because of metal oxidation on the snap. There is an open pocket on the inside which is missing the stitching on the right side, about a total of 3″ from the top. Strap is in great shape (usually not the case in a vintage bag). One slightly thin spot on the bottom of the bag, in the white section, middle (see photos); a few thinning spots of the bottom of the bag (see photos). A stylish and unique addition to your vintage handbag collection! Fresh to the market from a Rhode Island estate.
