Today we are happy to offer for sale an original and authentic certificate of authenticity for an original painting by renowned American painter Thomas Hart Benton! A bit of info on Thomas Hart Benton:
Thomas Hart Benton (April 15, 1889 – January 19, 1975) was an American painter and muralist. Along with Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry, he was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement. His fluid, sculpted figures in his paintings showed everyday people in scenes of life in the United States. His work is strongly associated with the Midwestern United States, the region in which he was born and which he called home for most of his life. He also studied in Paris, lived in New York City for more than 20 years and painted scores of works there, summered for 50 years on Martha’s Vineyard off the New England coast, and also painted scenes of the American South and West. At the age of 33, Benton married Rita Piacenza, an Italian immigrant, in 1922. They met while Benton was teaching art classes for a neighborhood organization in New York City, where she was one of his students. They were married for almost 53 years until Benton’s death in 1975; Rita died eleven weeks after her husband. The couple had a son, Thomas Piacenza Benton, born in 1926, and a daughter, Jessie Benton, born in 1939.
This certificate of authenticity originates from Mrs. Michela Piacenza Wright (1927-2012), who was the niece of Rita Piacenza Benton and Thomas Hart Benton. Mrs. Wright and her husband, Mr. Evan Jon Wright, were gifted an unsigned watercolor farmhouse landscape painting by Thomas Hart Benton while staying at the Benton residence in Kansas City in 1953. This certificate by the original owners and family relations of Thomas Hart Benton validates and authenticates that original art work. The certificate was written up on May 24, 1988 in Carmel, NY where Mr. and Mrs. Wright resided; the certificate is signed by both on 8×12 paper and presumably was created when they sold the piece… but somehow over time the certificate and piece were separated.
The certificate presents well and is in very good vintage condition, with normal minor wear and toning commensurate with age. This is a great opportunity to acquire a rare certificate of authenticity generated by a family member of the artist which validates the provenance of the work. What a serendipitous find this would be for whoever currently possesses the described watercolor! If there’s any way to find the owner, eBay will be it! Let us know if that is you, someone you know, or if you’re interested in continuing the plight to reunite this certificate with it’s subject work of art! Fresh to the market!
