Here we have an authentic mid-century-modern, 8-lamp, brass chandelier by Lightolier. We believe this model was designed by Gerald Thurston and/or Gaetano Sciolari (in fact they worked together on many projects). Coincidentally, the proprieter of our antiques mall was a former (early1980’s) Lightolier Industrial Designer and successor to Gerald Thurston at Lightolier, and is of the opinion that this chandelier is very consistent with Thurston and Sciolari’s work… and of course Thurston was the Director of Design during that period so he had his hand in everything. Hanging as the focal point of your dining room or foyer, this beautifully designed fixture will set the theme for your mid-century modern interior.
The fixture is made from solid brass which is polished in some places and chemically darkened in other places. The turnings under each socket are among the intentionally darkened areas, giving the appearance of wood. This wood-tone treatment really works nicely to aesthetically associate the fixture with the wooden furniture in the space.
This chandelier has been tested and is in full working condition. The original cloth-wrapped wiring is still viable; appearing a bit fuzzy here and there (normal and not dangerous). The arms on this chandelier were not attached to the body in the traditional manner (using a nut and lock washer); rather they were attached with a clip. Over time a few of these clips have lost a little tension so some of the arms tend to jiggle a bit when handled. They are however at no apparent risk of detaching and it doesn’t affect appearance or functionality. Expect usual signs of age, use, cleaning, handling, and storage including intermittent, minor surface abrasions on the top beams, and moderate striated patination on the original ceiling canopy (not sure how this happened but it’s hardly noticable when hanging). Overall the fixture shows very nicely an no doubt will look great wherever it’s hung. Buy with confidence; please see our current seller rating! Item(s) will be professionally packed with extra care to help prevent losses or damage in transit.
