Today we are happy to offer for sale a beautiful vintage New England Collectors Society Frederic Remington The Savage bronzed bust! The New England Collectors Society of West Haven, CT, was a division of Reed & Barton Silversmiths, “makers of fine products since 1924.” They sold collectible spoons, prints, statues, snow globes, thimbles and other items for the collector. Frederic Remington (1861-1909) created The Savage, copyrighted in 1908, as a pendant to his only other bust, The Sergeant of four years earlier. Both, miniaturized in scale, represent early twentieth-century stereotypes rather than specific individuals. The physiognomy and defiant facial expression depicted in The Savage represents one of Remington’s primary characterizations of Native Americans in his sculptures, including in The Cheyenne and The Scalp. Only one cast of The Savage, which Remington wrote of seeing in the window of Tiffany & Company in 1908, appears to have been produced during his lifetime; its location remains unknown. This N.E.C.S. bust is finely crafted and detailed of bronzed-colored resin and cast from the original sculpture. This piece is numbered 0860/9500 and features the artist’s original signature on back of base. Bust presents well and is in very good vintage condition, with very minor display wear and patina commensurate with age, and no chips or cracks. Add elegance and style to any fine art collection with this iconic bust…Fresh to the market! Dimensions: 10″ in height, 5-1/4″ in width, 5-1/8″ in depth NOTE: Shipping cost includes full insurance.
