A bit of info on Ernest Rancoulet: Ernest Rancoulet was a French sculptor best known for his Neoclassical bronze figures of mythological creatures, society women, and athletes. Rancoulet participated in the Paris Salon for several years, regularly exhibiting his elegant figurines and portrait busts. His practice was distinct for his affinity for working in pairs, often casting two varying copies of the same subject intended to be displayed side by side, as seen in his Pair of Bronze Figures of Victorian Women. The sculptor also frequently inscribed mythical verse onto his works, notably including Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Born in Bordeaux, France in 1870, Rancoulet’s life and career was prolific but short, ending with his death in 1915. The wonderful statue is beautifully designed and finely crafted and detailed. Made of solid bronze, the sculpture has a wonderful warm patinated finish further enhanced by the genuine patina of time. The piece depicts the two beautiful young women wearing one-piece bathing suits and merrily playing leapfrog. The base of the work emulates the sandy surface of the beach with one of the girl’s discarded wide brimmed hat. Trouville-sur-Mer, commonly referred to as Trouville, is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. Trouville-sur-Mer borders Deauville. This village of fishermen is a popular tourist attraction in Normandy. The bronze’s detailing is truly beautiful and captures the lighthearted joyful spirit of Belle Epoque France. This piece is signed “A Trouville” on the edge of base and “Rancoulet” on top left corner of base. Sculpture presents well and is in very good antique condition, with very minor display wear, scuffing and patina commensurate with age. Add old world French elegance and style to any interior with this fabulous bronze which will make an outstanding addition to any fine bronze collection.
