Description

TITLE: Antique Howard & Co Gilded Age French Repousse Sterling Silver Vanity Boudoir Set
DESCRIPTION: This is a stunning late 19th century ladies vanity service made by the renowned silversmiths Dominick & Haff for the esteemed high-end jeweler Howard & Co of New York. The set is done in the lavish and elegant Louis XVI Revival style popular during the Gilded Age. These pieces are a prime example of top tier silversmithing. All are finely crafted and detailed and made of hallmarked sterling silver. The dimensional repousse pattern relates a blooming hibiscus descending from a billowing bow-tied ribbon in a gorgeous symmetrical formation which is very pleasant, indeed! The set includes the following pieces:
  • 1 large dresser jar, marked on the underside: “STERLING PAT.APR. HOWARD & CO. 1890 NEW YORK 86.” 3″ in height, 3.5″ in diameter. Weight: 157 grams
  • 1 long, ovular dresser jar, marked: “STERLING 22 6&1/2 HOWARD & CO. 1890 NEW YORK PAT’D 89.” 6.5” in length, 1.85” in width, 1″ in height. Weight: 128 grams
  • 2 small circular dresser jars, identically marked on the underside: “STERLING 2 HOWARD & CO.,” followed by the company’s logo. 5/8” in height, 1.75” in diameter. Weight: 27 grams each
  • 1 weighted beveled glass hand mirror, marked on the glass-facing side beneath the handle, “STERLING,” followed by the company logo and “54.” On the pattern side beneath the handle, marked “PA ‘D.89.”  7” length, 5.5” width. Weight: 314 grams (weighted).
  • 2 weighted hair brushes, marked “STERLING PAT. APR.” 9” length, 3” in width, 1” bristles. Weight: 199 grams each (weighted).
  • 1 weighted lint brush, marked “STERLING PAT. APR.”  7” length, 2″ width, 1” bristles. Weight: 172 grams (weighted).
Each piece also has an elegant “FGA” and “BB” monogram, which adds a bit of mystery as to the wealthy woman who owned this set a century ago.

CONDITION: This set is offered in good to very good antique condition. Typical short stress cracks at the junctures of the otherwise stable hairbrush handles, a cluster of small dimples at the end of just one hairbrush handle, and a few light scratches in the thick glass surface of the mirror (that might be professionally polished away) are the only issues noted. The sterling could use a bit of polish. Please read complete description for dimensions, and review all photos prior to purchase.
