We are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful Gorham Strasbourg pipkin and resting tray! Patented in 1897, Strasbourg, a true rococo design, was inspired by master designers in the Louis XV period, who introduced to art this popular style of ornamentation characterized by curves and pierced shellwork decoration. Reverse scrolls outline this elegant pattern.
This elegant and formal pipkin and its matching resting tray are finely crafted of sterling silver with lavish and ornate details. The pipkin features a long handle with scroll-work on both sides, a sleek pouring spout (perfect for sauces!) and more lavish scroll-work around the rim. The resting tray features a small recess to set the pipkin and matching scrollwork. Both pieces are marked “Gorham Sterling”. Pipkin is additionally marked “1124”; the under tray is additionally marked “1125”.
The set presents well and is in good condition, with minor wear, tarnish and patina commensurate with age and light use. The resting tray has some small marks and dings that could be fixed by a jeweler if desired, but are covered by the pipkin when it is resting on it. This would make a beautiful addition to any fine sterling collection. Fresh to the market!
