“Rocky Point Park was an amusement park on the Narragansett Bay side of Warwick, Rhode Island. It operated from the late 1840s until it closed in 1995…. From the 1950s through the mid-1990s, Rocky Point Park was one of the most popular attractions in Rhode Island. It featured rides such as the Skyliner, Corkscrew Loop Roller Coaster, Log Flume, and the Freefall (similar to the identically named ride at Six Flags parks), which fell 13 stories at 55 mph (89 km/h). It also featured the Shore Dinner Hall, famous for its clamcakes, steamers, lobsters, and New England Clam Chowder, which seated over 4,000 patrons at a time.”
If you attended the park in the 1980s or ’90s, then you know this cup design well. A lobster wearing a bow tie and holding a cane in one claw and his hat marked “ROCKY” in the other stands above black text reading “ROCKY POINT PARK WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND.” The other side shows the park’s famous Corkscrew Loop (or Loop Corkscrew) roller coaster with the text “I Got Looped at Rocky Point Park.” Rocky Point operated Loop Corkscrew from 1984 until 1995. It sold the roller coaster in 1996 to Wild Waves Theme Park in Federal Way, Washington, where it thrills visitors to this day as Wild Thing. The bottom of the cup is marked “NYMAN MFG CO. E. PROVIDENCE RI MADE IN USA 20431.” As with Rocky Point, Nyman is no longer in business, so this wax paper cup is a small souvenir of our state’s manufacturing heritage as well.
As these cups were meant to be used once and then tossed, they are something that nearly every visitor remembers but few thought to save as a souvenir. We have acquired a small original sleeve of these cups, and are now putting them online. They have been in storage for more than twenty years, and it’s highly unlikely that additional inventory exists anywhere else. So this may be your only chance to acquire an actual Rocky Point cup! The cups are new old stock, have no smell, and can be used as originally intended (should you choose to do so). Each cup measures 6″ in height, 3 5/8″ diameter at the rim, 2 7/16″ diameter at the base, and we estimate they are approximately 20 ounces in size. We will gladly ship multiples in the same box at no extra charge. Buy one now before they’re gone forever!
