Portuguese Palissy Crab Majolica Plate

Today we are delighted to offer for sale a rare and fabulous large antique Portuguese Palissy ware majolica sealife figural plate!

Palissy ware is a 19th-century term for ceramics produced in the style of the famous French potter Bernard Palissy (c. 1510–90) who was Queen Catherine de Medici of France’s prefered potter and decorated the grotto at the now-demolished Tuileries Palace in Paris. Palissy referred to his own work in the familiar manner as rustique (in English “rusticware”). Palissy’s distinctive style of polychrome lead-glazed earthenware in a sombre earth-toned palette, using naturalistic scenes of plants and animals cast from life, was much imitated by other potters both in his own lifetime and especially in the 19th century.

This wonderful and spectacular plate was expertly and intricately crafted and detailed in the late 19th century by Portuguese potter Alvaro Jose of Caldas da Rainha (Queen’s Hot Springs), a celebrated city founded in the 15th century by Queen Eleanor of Viseu of Portugal. The piece features an extra-large three-dimensional tromple l’oeil likeness of a brown crab resting upon a sand-like ground, with molten green algae-like border decorated with three dimensional mussels, clams, and algae, with with open shell at the bottom of the plate. The piece is vividly glazed with lustrous and warm poly-chromed earthen tones. The plate in stamped on the back “Alvaro Jose/Caldas das Rainhas/Portugal”.

Plate presents beautifully and is in very good antique condition, with very minimal display wear and patina commensurate with age. Aside from normal minute manufacturing imperfections no chips or cracks noted. Please review all photos before purchasing.
