Today we are happy to offer for sale a rare antique set of four 19th century Warwick Rhode Island Bank obsolete remainder notes! Obsolete currency refers to paper money issued by entities other than the federal government, e.g. state banks, railroads, merchants, state and local governments. The money issued by state banks makes up the largest portion of obsolete currency, also commonly referred to as “Broken Banknotes”. A remainder note is a term used for unsigned, non issued obsolete bank notes. This rare set of obsolete bank notes was issued by The Warwick Bank, which was incorporated at the village of Apponaug, Warwick, Rhode Island in February, 1818. The bank continued business until 1859. This rare set of remainder notes is composed of two $5 notes and $10 and $20 notes. The notes feature ornate elegant design details depicting playful children, farmers and cattle, a young lady feeding chickens, and a depiction of Benjamin Franklin. Note set presents well and is in very good antique condition, with very minor wear, toning/patina commensurate with age. Notes are un-attached and have minor edge wear/losses; top $5 note has a very small tear at top. The set is a truly rare piece of Rhode Island and New England financial history and is remarkably intact.
