Today we are excited to offer for sale a gorgeous antique Dunhill inlaid marquetry wood box! Alfred Dunhill (1872 – 1959) was an English tobacconist, entrepreneur and inventor. He is the progenitor of Alfred Dunhill Ltd. a London-based luxury goods company and the Dunhill tobacco products company. This finely and expertly crafted box was sold by the Dunhill Shop in Vienna, located in a historic baroque building at Kärntner Straße 12. The box is made of what appears to be mahogany and is intricately inlaid with various exotic woods. The inlaid marquetry design on the lid depicts a provincial village lookout tower and gathering hall surrounded by a wall – typical for many European villages in the 19th century. The sides of the box are veneered with mahogany panels. On the inside of the lid is a gold foil paper label that reads “DUNHILL SHOP, HORVAT, KARNERSTR.12, VIENNA.” This box was most likely originally intended to store tobacco products but the possibilities are endless on what else you could store inside. Box is in excellent condition for its age – the only noteworthy imperfection is one tiny loss to the veneer at the bottom edge on on side panel – not at all objectionable (if you even find it) and consistent with true well-preserved antiquity. This elegant and refined box is truly a work of art and it will add old-world elegance and connoisseurship to any interior. Fresh to the market!
