Today we are thrilled to be offering for sale a rare and quite wonderful Pre-War Lionel Standard Gauge six piece train set with boxes! Lionel Corporation was an American toy manufacturer and retailer that was in business from 1900 to 1995. Founded as an electrical novelties company, Lionel specialized in various products throughout its existence, but toy trains and model railroads were its main claim to fame. Lionel trains, produced from 1900 to 1969, drew admiration from model railroaders around the world for the solidity of their construction and the authenticity of their detail. During its peak years in the 1950s, the company sold $25 million worth of trains per year. In 2006, Lionel’s electric train, along with the Easy-Bake Oven, became the first electric toy inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame.
This wonderful set is composed of the following pieces: Lionel Locomotive Engine #10, Railway Mail car #332, two (2) Pullman #339 cars, 2 Observation #331 Caboose. The set is finished in a dark gray color with dark red accents. All cars come with the original boxes and Lionel outer box. The set was purchased by our consignors parents when he was a young boy and has only had one owner. The pieces have been carefully stored away and preserved since the mid 1940’s. The set presents beautifully and is in very good antique, gently-played with condition, with minor wear/scuffing, a few very minor losses to paint, and patina commensurate with age. Sorry but we have no way to test these trains so they are sold as is though we have no reason to believe that they don’t work as intended.
Original boxes are in fair shape, with wear and tear expected from age. The outer box shows significant wear and soiling from attic dust but graphics are fully legible. This is a truly wonderful opportunity to acquire a rare and wonderfully preserved all-original Lionel pre-war standard gauge train set! This set will make a top-notch addition to any Lionel train collection. Fresh to the market!
