Today we are very excited to offer for sale an extremely rare and absolutely stunning pair of antique Palace-size marquetry French boxes! This once-in-a-lifetime pair of boxes is beautiful beyond words! Expertly and intricately crafted in France in the 19th century, this pair of dressing room storage caskets were no doubt commissioned and crafted for an aristocratic noblewoman or wealthy upper class person to store valuable and precious treasures. Each box is just the epitome of elegance and luxury, from a bygone era of refinement and beauty when even the most humble object, like a storage box, was ornamented and luxuriated to be a work of art itself. Both boxes are Palace or Chateau-sized, meaning their larger than usual size indicates grand and noble object(s) was stored within. We believe these boxes were used in a ladie’s dressing room to store a diadem/tiara or another precious rare object since the interior is luxuriously and softly upholstered to cushion and protect the item. A wonderful and magnificent feature of these boxes that is extremely rare and seldom seem in the open market is the absolutely majestic contrasting marquetry: one box features the same marquetry as the other box but the marquetry wood is reversed. This striking features creates a graphic design contrast between both boxes, highlighting different areas of the marquetry in a play of light and darkness. The marquetry design feature an exuberant and very ornate Napoleon III Second Empire neo-baroque style that recalls the work of André Charles Boulle, the preferred cabinet maker of the Sun King Louis XIV from the 17th century. The interior of each box features luxurious Aquamarine blue silk that is tufted with matching fringe. These caskets were no doubt aquired in France and brought to the US in the late 19th century, a time when the upper strata of Society was buying up all sorts of treasures from France, England, and the rest of Europe, to furnish their lavish mansions. Both boxes present beautifully and are in very good antique condition, with very minimal wear commensurate with age and fragility. Each box has a naturally-occurring hairline split that goes across the bottom and up the to the edge of the bottom molding on either side (which happens with pieces like this because of changes in humidity over time). The marquetry is in very good antique condition. No fading or splitting. The interior of each box is in very good antique condition, with hardly any wear at all. These treasures from a gilded and glamorous time would make a fabulous gift to a bride for her trousseau! These treasure boxes will add old world grandeur and elegance to any room in your home or business! Fresh to the market…Buy them before they’re gone!
