Today we are happy to offer for sale a HUGE, wonderful and rare antique Victorian copper weathervane! This enormous and outstanding weathervane dates to the late 19th century or possibly early 20th century. The piece is finely and intricately crafted of copper which has aged and developed a fabulous, all-natural time-earned verdi-gris patina! The weathervane has many ornate Victorian design details throughout. The piece features a conical base with undulating high relief detailing. The finial of the cone features curly cue adornments. The directional letters are mounted to a gyrating center globe topped by the flag-like directional identificator ornament, which features arabesque detailing. The weathervane was in the estate of a elder gentleman who passed on over 25 years ago. He once was a caretaker at Rhode Island College. Family lore tells that one day long ago the college asked for the weathervane, which was then installed on the roof of a building on campus, to be removed while the roof was being repaired. The college then decided to retire the piece and ended up allowing the caretake to have it. The weathervane stayed in pieces in the caretaker’s barn at his home in rural western Rhode Island since then until it was just recently brought out to be sold during a cleanout. The weathervane would have been originally mounted on a wooden conical base that went inside the copper base; then the wooden base would have had a center rod on which the separate pieces of the weathervane assembly would slide onto. The buyer will need a new block (if mounting on a building again) and in any event a rod mounted to a flat base, as those did not come with the piece (the weathervane is slightly tilted for that reason, once a new rod is in place it will stand straight). Weather vane presents beautifully and is in very good antique condition, with wear/oxidation, and patina commensurate with age and type of use. Given the nature and use of this piece there are expected areas of wear and tear, missing parts and old and newer repairs with varying degrees of quality in workmanship. Eight of the ribbed ornaments at the base are missing, we have two of the missing pieces which will be included with the piece. One of the domed cap finials at the end of the directional pointer is missing. The two upper sections of the weathervane are currently fixed to each other with removable silicone adhesive since the center rod is not present. The piece is in wonderful antique shape, sold as-found and surely a good candidate for further restoration. This is truly a remarkable and wonderful opportunity to own a rare and majestic piece of New England Architectural history! Add this piece to any building to give it character and style! Would also make a truly fabulous decorative piece for any interior (it will be THE conversation piece of your collection). Fresh to the market!
