DESCRIPTION: This listing is for an incredible, complete, marble chess set by Italian designed Giuseppe Vasari for Gorham!

This 32 piece chess set is one of the rarer examples of Varsari’s chess sets, with silvered bronze and gilt traditional chess busts atop green and amber/brown marble bases. The board is crafted of beautifully translucent blue-green and white marble squares with a silvered bronze base of fleur-de-lis bands with cherubs accenting each corner.

Each playing piece sits on a pedestal of marble with a silver or gilt bronzed base, depending on the side the piece corresponds to. All pieces are signed “Giuseppe Vasari Made in Italy” on the underside. The board has a gilt medallion on the underside that reads “Made in Italy by Giuseppe Vasari for Gorham Company.”

Given the fact that each piece is handcrafted and marble is a natural stone, this is a remarkable cohesive set, though there are subtle height differences between like pieces owing to the different bases. See condition report below for more details.

CONDITION: Chess set is offered in excellent vintage condition, with minimal patina and wear. Some marble bases on playing pieces have slight roughness to the edges and natural inclusions in the stone, but no chips have been noted. Loss of silvering/gilding is present in minor amounts on various pieces. Board is in equally good shape, and marble has no cracks or damage. Please review all photos.

Pawn playing pieces have bases measuring appx. 1.5″ in diameter; all other playing pieces have bases measuring appx. 1.75″ in diameter.
