Description
TITLE: Antique 17th Century Austrian (Tirol) Carved Wood Jesus Corpus Christi Crucifixion Sculpture
DESCRIPTION: Collectors of religious artifacts, take note! This beautiful carved wood Corpus Christi statue dates to the late 17th or early 18th century – a true antique! It comes from the collection of a world-renowned Austrian architect and designer.
This large, 3-feet-tall carved wood depiction of Christ in his last moments of crucifixion comes from Tirol (Austria) and is 300+ years old. From the expert report sent with this statue: “The expressiveness of the face is reinforced by the crown of thorns caved from a single piece of wood. The pronounced movement of the body is accented by a richly carved piece of loin (Lendentuch). The last surface restoration from the 19th century is partially peeled-off and should be removed entirely by a restorer.” This is a haunting piece, especially since it is Christ’s body only, and is not resting against a cross.
This beautiful statue will ship with its expert report from authorized expert of Antiquities Gerhard Schöppl of Salzburg. The report includes the description above, a conditions statement, and both the original German report and its authorized English translation.
THIS STATUE WILL SHIP IN THE WOOD PACKING CRATE THAT WAS USED TO SAFELY SHIP IT FROM GERMANY.
CONDITION: Statue is offered in as-found antique condition, with wear, damage and loss of restoration (last restoration dates to 19th century) present. Right hand is missing four fingers, left hand is missing one finger, left foot is missing all toes. Arms are detached from body, and some damage from (long gone) pests is present on the wood. This is a remarkable piece, especially given its age, but is in need of further work. Please review all photos before purchasing.
