Today we are excited to offer for sale a very rare and unusual solid (and very heavy) 18K yellow gold vintage brooch pendant.
This huge medallion-like piece features an Art Nouveau design with the bust of a blindfolded Lady Justice surrounded by a rolled rope detail and outer frame of leaves and berries. The gorgeous woman is facing to the left and is carved in high relief. Her hair is flowing in a classic Roman style, the blindfold appears to be enameled, and her garb is off the shoulder. The origin of Lady Justice was Lustitia, the goddess of Justice, in Roman mythology. Blind justice became a symbol for the virtue of justice with which every emperor wished to associate his regime.
Though formally a goddess, she was from the onset viewed more as an artistic symbolic personification rather than as an actual deity with religious significance. Lady Justice can still be seen today on many state flags, court emblems and the Statue of Liberty. The blindfold represents the impartiality and objectivity of the law a a law which isn’t swayed by politics, wealth or fame, in its decisions. The leaves around the outer frame appear to be holly leaves with berries. Holly was regarded as a symbol of fertility by the ancients and later as a symbol of Christ, with the red berries representing his blood and the pointed leaves the crown of thorns. The brooch is marked 750 for 18k gold. The closure is a trombone push and pull type and the brooch has a folding bail for wearing as a necklace.
This is a statement piece and quite large, measuring just over 2″ diameter.
This brooch is just stunning, we really can’t say enough superlatives to describe it. Brooch presents beautifully and is in excellent antique, pre-owned condition, with very minimal wear, tarnish and patina commensurate with age. Chain not included.
Dimensions: 2-1/8″ in diameter
Total Weight: 33 grams (That’s over a full ounce of gold!)
