TITLE: 18K Gold 40″ Chain Necklace Byzantine Roman Coin Pendant – in the manner of (or unsigned) Elizabeth Locke. This authentic coin is over 1500 years old!
DESCRIPTION: This is a truly exquisite and very fine high-end estate necklace, of superb craftsmanship and design. The necklace and its pendant are both very finely crafted and detailed and made of solid and marked, luxurious (750) 18k yellow gold. This necklace is solid and heavy, indicating its high quality. Aside from the 750 gold mark on the clasp and bail of pendant, the only other marking noted is “E. 61”. Although un-signed this piece clearly resembles the work of renowned jeweler Elizabeth Locke, who is well known for incorporating uncommon elements such as Roman and Grecian coins in her jewelry designs. The necklace features a long, 40″ lariat rope link chain with square and round rings interspersing each other. From this chain hangs an authentic Byzantine bronze coin (follis) from the Justinian period: Justin II – Emperor: November 15, 565 A.D. – October 5, 578 A.D. The coin is from the Constantinople mint circa 565-578 A.D. One side shows Justin on left holding cross on globe and Sophia on right, holding sceptre topped by cross, both nimbate, seated facing on double-throne. The reverse side shows a Large M with Cross in the right upper corner, ANNO to left, regnal year to right, officina letter below, mintmark. The coin is securely bound in a heavy solid and marked 18k gold bezel set pendant frame with bead and spring-like ornamentation and bail. This piece was purchased by our consignor’s grandmother at a high end antique jeweler in New York City many years ago. The piece was seldom worn and is in wonderful condition, ready to be worn and enjoyed. This is an incredible opportunity to acquire a truly outstanding necklace embedded with fascinating ancient history!
NOTE: Shipping cost is comprised of virtually all insurance. We do not mark up shipping.
CONDITION: The necklace and pendant both present beautifully and are in excellent antique, gently-used condition, with minimal wear, micro-scuffing, and patina commensurate with age and careful use. Please review all photos before purchasing.
DIMENSIONS: chain is 40″ long/un-clasped; each link is approx. 3/16″ wide; the pendant is 1-13/16″ high (includes bail), 1″ in width, and a little over 1/8″ thick.
WEIGHT: the chain weighs 68 grams (Well over 2 TROY OUNCES of SOLID 18K GOLD!); the pendant weighs 20 grams – this weight includes the coin which we did not attempt to remove from its setting; we estimate the coin to weigh just about 10 grams as that is the average weight of other similar examples.
