Here we have a rare and highly sought after 1848 Liberty Head $2.50 gold coin, graded “Cleaned- AU Detail” by PCGS. Decide for yourself but to us this is clearly a top AU example that we believe would be a grade “58” in detail aside from the cleaning (PCGS does not asssign a numeric grade to cleaned coins for some reason). This coin was designed by noted United States Mint engraver Christian Gobrecht, who designed other coins featuring the Liberty motif shared on the obverses of other coins from the era. Only 6,500 of these coins were struck in 1848, but most have long since disappeared and thus the coin is quite scarce today.
According to PCGS, this coin was cleaned at some point, but we know from the consigner that it was not cleaned within the last 60 years that he has owned it, so it still shows good aged patina. As you can see in out photos, we have a highly detailed picture of this coin. Dimensions: Diameter:18 mm Actual Gold Weight: 0.1209 oz
