Description
This beautiful mid-19th century, early Americana storage jar/vessel is beautifully crafted and detailed. The large and heavy piece features a thick and sturdy stoneware ceramic body salt-glazed in buff tones. The front is decorated with a deep blue glazed traditional floral/leaf design done in blue. “J Norton & Co, Bennington VT” is etched on the front, along with the number 2, indicating its generous 2-gallon capacity. The interior is glazed in dark brown/black. This crock has a wonderful time-earned patina.
Crock presents well and is in very good antique condition, with minor wear, discoloration and patina commensurate with age. A few minor manufacturing flaws may be present. A small, hard to notice stable surface fracture has been noted on the bottom rim, along with two small manufacturing flaws in the glaze on the back.
