The Enterprise Manufacturing Co. was founded in Philadelphia in 1864. The company made cast-iron equipment for chopping, grinding, slicing, and stuffing meats and other food. It also made sad irons for several years. Enterprise Manufacturing was sold to Silex in 1955. This remarkable late 19th century coffee grinder, no. 218, is finely crafted and detailed. This large and stately floor standing coffee grinder weighs over 150lbs and is crafted of cast iron with a red enamel-like painted finish. It is made in 2 pieces with the base being separate. The piece features a foliated reticulated legs and body supporting the center section grinder with geometrical-insert double grinding wheels with raised letters marked “Enterprise Mfg. CO. Philadelphia USA”. Body is marked “Pat. Oct. 21,1873”. The coffee grinder presents well and is in very good antique condition, with minor wear and patina commensurate with age. Paint appears to have been touched up over it’s normal course of use. The top grinder lid is cracked at the hinge.
