Today we are happy to offer for sale a charming covered casserole or tureen made by Pillivuyt & Cie Porcelaine in France. It is a covered dish which will go from the oven to the table, resembling a baked meat pie. This example bears the 3D likeness of a duck or mallard’s head and is sometimes described as a pate casserole. This is the largest size the company made, a #5. It is marked with an green stamped “PILLIVUYT FRANCE 22?,” and an impressed “5”. The base is an unusual oval shape with pointed ends. This is sometimes referred to as majolica, but the painting is done in with a mat finish and the inside reveals a hard white porcelain base. There is a small vent hole in the lid to release steam.
Casserole is in very good, vintage, pre-owned condition. There is a large section on his head which has a glossy finish. We don’t believe it’s a defect, just not something we’ve seen on the other casseroles we’re handling. There is a 1/2″ chip on the underside of the inside rim of the casserole (not visible when displayed), otherwise no cracks, repairs or other issues.
