Today we are happy to offer for sale a great antique Humpty Dumpty cast iron mechanical bank! This classic antique piece is nicely crafted and detailed. It is made of hand-painted cast iron which still retains most of the original painted finish. The bank is fashioned in the likeness of the iconic clown Humpty Dumpty. He swallows coins from his right hand when a lever on his back is pressed down. The original of this piece was made by the Shepard Hardware Company of Buffalo, New York in the late 1880’s.
This bank has been reproduced countless times throughout the 20th century. This is an example of a particularly early reproduction dating to the 1920’s and is now an antique itself. It is a very accurate reproduction with crisp mold work and elaborate hand-painting which has aged considerably (but in a pleasant way). The key difference between this model and the original is on the underside. Knowledgeable collectors will notice the difference. This particular example was fortunate to retain its original cast-metal plug which appears to have the word “patented” embossed on it. The piece is marked on the bottom “Made in USA”.
Bank presents well and is in good antique condition, with wear and patina commensurate with age. There is loss to painted finish and minor oxidation; bank sold as-found – please review all photos before purchasing. This great clown bank will make a wonderful addition to any fine antique mechanical bank collection!
