George William Whitaker was called the “Dean of the Providence Painters”. He was instrumental in recognizing the need for an organization to nurture and support the talented artists within the state. The Providence Art Club was formally instituted in 1880 by Whitaker and his friends Sydney Burleigh, E.M. Bannister and Charles Walter Stetson.
This handsome and elegant oil on canvas painting, titled “Barbizon Landscape, 1894” is masterfully executed, with Whitaker’s traditional style and technique. The painting depicts an open field/pasture with a low stone wall and stormy skies. The painting features dark and inviting colors. The picture is expertly painted and vividly detailed. The oil is framed in an elegant ornate dark gilt wood frame, and is ready to be hung, admired, and enjoyed! Signed on the lower right corner “GW Whitaker 94”.
Painting presents beautifully and is in very good antique condition, with very minor display wear and patina. Painting surface has very minor crazing and a few minute areas of losses.
