Today we are delighted to offer for sale a wonderful vintage ANRI carved wood music box with Thorens music works! The ANRI company was founded in 1912 by Josef Anton Riffeser, which he named using the first two letters of his first and last name. Alois Riffeser traveled to the major European cities to sell the wood carved figurines and toys which were bought from the farmers of the Gröden Valley located in the Dolomite region of the Alps. This area in South Tyrol was part of Austria-Hungary at the time until being annexed to Italy in 1919. The company is still in business and in family hands! This sweet music box features a musical movement by Thorens from Switzerland. The box features a round rotating top with a carved wood figural diorama grouping depicting a mother and her two childen, all dressed in Tyrolean clothing. The mother plays a small viola while her children follow her dancing. On the ground there are three small birds, two small violas, and flowers and mushrooms. The box plays “Happy Talk”, a show tune from the 1949 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific. It is sung by Bloody Mary to the American lieutenant Joe Cable, about having a happy life, after he begins romancing her daughter Liat. Liat performs the song with hand gestures as Mary sings. The box features a wind-up key and a on/off button. The piece is marked on the key “Genuine Thorens Swiss Music Work” and on the bottom “ANRI Italy”. The music box presents beautifully and is in excellent vintage condition, with very minimal display wear and patina commensurate with age. Music box is in perfect working condition. This sweet and adorable box will bring a smile to your face whenever you play it… Fresh to the market!
