Today we are delighted to offer for sale a beautiful antique 19th century original Victorian oil painting! This stunning masterpiece was created by the painter E. A. Stacey and painted in Aug of 1891! Expertly and exquisitely executed, this oil on canvas painting depicts a pair of towering gladiola flowers, one white and one red, against a moody chiaroscuro ecru background. The colors are soft and sensuous. The painting is signed on the right bottom corner “E. A. Stacey”. There is virtually no information available on this talented painter. There are a few newspaper articles from Australia dating from the late 1800s about a patron of the arts called Mr. E. A. Stacey; also there is a grave at the Basra War Cemetery in Al Basrah, Basra, Iraq for an E. A. Stacey, date of death 21 July 1917; he was no doubt a soldier in the battle of Basra (1914) – when the British captured Basra from the Ottoman Empire in the Mesopotamian campaign. The canvas is mounted on a lavish giltwood frame, which features extensive rocaille ornamentation and gold leafing on gesso. The frame was manufactured by “Mark L. Hill”, a frame and molding dealer from Portland, ME. The frame is signed on the back “Gertrude E. Cummings”, who was perhaps the owner of this lovely painting at some point?! This fabulous artwork presents beautifully: canvas in very good antique condition, with very minor wear and patina commensurate with age; no rips, tears, or fading; frame is in good antique condition, with very minor wear/tarnishing, and a couple areas of minimal loss to gesso and gilding. This beautiful, authentic, and all-original painting will add Victorian elegance and refinement to any fine art collection and will be the conversation piece in any room in your home or business! Fresh to the market!
