Today we are excited to offer for sale a stunning huge antique Victorian cameo brooch/pendant. This is an unusually large piece measuring 2 1/4″ in height, set in 10K gold (tested), with a safety pin back clasp and a folding loop for adapting to a chain. This is a deeply carved shell cameo depicting the Roman Goddess Diana the Huntress, symbolizing the moon and nature, the goddess of childbirth and women. She is depicted with flowing curly hair drawn up in a bun decorated with feathers, and with a crescent moon at the top of her head. She appears to be wearing earrings and has a quiver with arrows on her back. She is clad in a draped Roman garment. The 10K yellow gold setting is very deep to accommodate the curve of the cameo; it is finished with a thin wire of gold circling the pin, affixed with three loops at each side. Brooch presents beautifully and is very good antique condition, with slight signs of wear consistent with age and light use. The outer thin rim of gold surrounding the cameo has slight dents/bends that can be easily straightened out by your jeweler inexpensively. Safety clasp with a working locking mechanism. Truly an impressive piece and wonderful example of this intricate form of jewelry. The best cameos are/were usually carved in Italy, as we believe this example was. A special and rare addition to any antique jewelry or cameo collection! Fresh to the market from a Rhode Island estate!
