Today we are thrilled to offer for sale a wonderful antique Pittsburgh reverse hand painted glass shade table lamp! The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company was founded in 1901 by renowned chemist Nicholas Kopp. The company specialized in high-end lamps and lighting in an array of colors and decorations. The company closed in 1926. Its lamps are now highly-sought after collector’s items.
This beautiful lamp features all the elements of craftsmanship and design that Pittsburgh is known for. The piece is intricately and expertly crafted and detailed. The lamp features a brush-stroke textured dome glass lamp shade. The reverse-painted shade (Pittsburgh shades and bases were frequently unsigned but we unconditionally guarantee that this one is authentic) features an artist hand-painted 360 degrees scenic of a beautiful setting sun and moody clouds over a rocky ocean edge with a picturesque beach house perched up on a cliff. By the way, it may help you to learn that Pittsburgh shades are made easier to identify because they are the only shades to use a 3-1/4″ center hole (which this one has). The bases as well have an unusually sized 2-part heat cap to match the hole in the shade. This makes Pittsburgh shades and bases non-interchangable with any other brand of lamp. The colorful and serene scene is painted in light brush strokes. When lit the scene glows from within and is truly a lovely work of art! The shade rests on a sturdy and handsome, square Aesthetic bronze-plated unsigned (but again unconditionally gauranteed authentic) Pittsburgh lamp base. The base is shown in the book titled “Better Electric Lamps” on page 73 and identified as Pittsburgh. Base includes original sockets with ball pulls and the whole lamp has been rewired with authentic and period-correct rayon-braid cord so it is safe and ready to use for another generation.
Lamp presents beautifully and is in very good antique condition, with very minimal display wear/scuffing and patina commensurate with age, routine household cleaning and careful use. Shade is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. Lamp is in proper operating condition. This is truly a wonderful opportunity to acquire a rare and outstanding piece of lighting art! Add elegance, warmth and style to any interior with this one-of-a-kind artist created Pittsburgh lamp! Fresh to the market from a prominent Rhode Island estate!
