Description
Today we are happy to offer for sale a beautiful antique English Renaissance-style carved wood armchair!
This classic and ornate piece is finely crafted and detailed. The chair features a solid wood frame intricately and lavishly hand-carved. The piece is a melange of antique styles, with Renaissance and Baroque detailing. The chair features a curved back carved on both sides, with allegorical depictions of heraldry symbols, dragons, and a caryatid with ribbons cascading out of its’ mouth; the ribbons are intertwined with a pair of cornucopias. Each arm features a carved depiction of a mythological figure. The right arm depicts an elderly renaissance-era bearded man while the left arm depicts an bare-breasted woman wearing a fine necklace. The front legs are square and tapered and finely carved with baroque classical carvings terminating in concave stile feet. The chair features a center stretcher and un-adorned back legs.
The piece was recently professionally reupholstered using an expensive printed cotton fabric featuring a neutral renaissance-style repeated square medallion pattern, with new seat and bespoke seat cushion.
The chair presents well and is in very good antique condition, with mild wear and patina commensurate with age and normal use. There are a few stable, non-structural age-related faint cracks on back rest. Frame has minor surface wear and patina; there are a few minute areas of losses to carved details. We’d suggest leaving everything as found… these small signs of age only add to the charm of this piece. Upholstery is new, fresh, and clean. Construction remains solid and comfortable.
