Today we are happy to offer for sale a rare and unique antique early 20th century Chinese silver ashtray with Yuan Shikai inset coin! Yuan Shikai (1859-1916) was a Chinese military and government official who rose to power during the late Qing dynasty, and tried to save the dynasty with a number of modernization projects including bureaucratic, fiscal, judicial, educational, and other reforms. He established the first modern army and a more efficient provincial government in North China in the last years of the Qing Empire before the abdication of the last Qing Emperor in 1911. Through negotiation, he became the first president of the Republic of China in 1912. This army and bureaucratic control were the foundation of his autocratic rule as the first formal President of the Republic of China. He was frustrated in a short-lived attempt to restore monarchy in China, with himself as the Hongxian Emperor. This beautiful commemorative ashtray is finely and intricately crafted of marked 90% Silver. The ashtray features a lightly-scalloped decorative border with three cigarette rests. The bottom of the ashtray features a Yuan Shikai currency coin heads down (as not disrespect the esteemed leader). The piece is marked on the underside border “KH/90%Silver”. Ashtray is in very good antique condition, with very minor wear/scuffing, tarnishing and patina commensurate with age and light use. This rare ashtray will make a wonderful and unique addition to any Tobacciana collection! Fresh to the market!
