Today we are delighted to offer for sale a truly stunning antique French Japy Freres onyx and ormolu mantle clock! This classic and elegant piece is the epitome of high French craftsmanship and clock-making! The world-renowned firm of Japy and Freres got its’ start with Frédéric Japy (1749-1812), who was a pioneer in the industrialization of not only clocks, but of manufacturing in general. An imaginative inventor of all sorts of machines, he began his career as a watchmaker. Japy revolutionized the manufacturing process by creating an assembly line in his plant, a process that had never been done before in clock-making. In 1806, Japy handed the direction of his businesses to his three sons – and it became Japy Frères (Japy Brothers) who, in turn, diversified the manufacturing to produce coffee grinders, typewriters, enamelware, kitchen utensils, office machines such as the first typewriters, refrigerator pumps, advertising signs and they invented more machines to transform copper and steel wires into elaborate hardware parts. The company survived until WWII when it went out of business. This wonderful 19th century clock is expertly and intricately crafted of solid onyx slabs, in the shape of a temple, in the Napoleon 2nd Empire Egyptian Revival style. The piece is ornamented with gilded ormolu in the Egyptian/neoclassical manner, with a caryatid in the pediment, and pilasters on either side of the clock face. The clock face is heavily ornamented and features a golden background. The clock is marked inside, on the movement, with the Japy Freres logo. The clock presents beautifully and in very good antique condition, with very minor wear and patina commensurate with age. Clock runs great, chime counts the hour and signals the half. Key included. This elegant and handsome piece will add French Victorian elegance to any room in your home or business! What better way to check the time than to look at a work of art like this! The chime is lovely too! A special piece for a special buyer!
