Today we are happy to offer for sale a beautiful antique 19th century Filippo Marantonio I Borsaioli oil on canvas painting! Filippo Marantonio (1863 – 1890) was an Italian classical painter active during the late Victorian era. The painter is noted for his realistic and lighthearted portraiture of everyday people. This handsome and elegant original oil on canvas painting is expertly painted and vividly detailed. The painting is titled I Borsaioli (The Pickpockets) and depicts two young and rowdy Italian pickpocket boys, wearing raggedy and worn clothing. One boy is defiantly shouting at the viewer while the other cynically smiles while smoking a pipe and are no doubt up to no good. The painting features a quiet contrast of muted and colorful tones on a light gray background. The boy smoking the pipe has a slightly lighter shadowing around his head, almost like a halo…perhaps the shouting boy is luring this once good child into the ways of the streets. The painting is jovial, fun, and thought-provoking. The oil is framed in an elegant ornate stepped silver gilt wood museum-quality frame and is completely ready to be hung, admired, and enjoyed! Signed on the lower right corner “Marantonio”. Painting presents beautifully and is in very good antique condition, with very minor display wear and patina. Painting surface is clean and bright, with very minimal wear and crazing and no visible repairs or in-painting. Frame is in very good antique condition, with very minimal wear and scuffing. A wonderful and one-of-a-kind painting that will add whimsical elegance and refined Italian classical style to any interior. A special piece for a special buyer!
