Today we are offering for sale a very lovely and delightful antique 19th century (or perhaps older) Louis XVI-style cane chair. This sweet chair is diminutive in size and exquisitely and expertly carved. The top rail features two sunflowers tied in a knot, along with small acanthus leaves intertwined with the rail, terminating in a rocaille acanthus leaf. The gondola-shaped back features a beaded center medallion resting on a carved back support. The back and the seats have the original cane. The fluted front legs are daintily carved; the back legs are plainly, but elegantly, carved as well. The inside of the seat is stamped with the letters “NL”, the initials of the ebeniste who carved this chair. This stunning petit chair is the perfect example of the restrained elegance and refinement of the neoclassical Louis XVI style (1774-1791). This lovely chair is perfect for a desk, vanity table, or as an accent piece! The chair presents beautifully, with some minor surface imperfections consistent with age and use. The cane on the seat is in fine shape; the cane in the back center medallion has a few losses; the cane on the left back panel is slightly dented. The front right leg is slightly loose, as is the seat from the bottom frame. The chair has been repaired previously, and could be restored by the buyer, or left as found. This is a delicate piece that will need to be used with love and care. An important and lovely piece that is as useful today as the day it was made, and sure to become an heirloom and wise investment.
