Today we are thrilled to be offering for sale a wonderful collection of three vintage watercolor paintings by world-renowned maritime painter Eric Erstine Campbell Tufnell! Commander Eric Tufnell was born on 9th September 1888 at Bangalore in India. He joined the H.M.S. Brittania as a cadet in 1903 and went to sea as a midshipman in 1904. Tufnell served in submarines from 1909 until 1917 and then in anti-submarine work until 1919. He commanded several small ships in the Eastern Mediterranean and served in the Fleet Air Arm 1926-30. In 1938 he was recalled to the Navy for meteorological work in Colombo and left Ceylon in 1942, soon after the Japanese attack. Tufnell took up an appointment to the Naval Information Services, where he served until his retirement in 1946. Although he received no formal art training, his knowledge of the seas and skies proved of great help to him in his painting. His watercolors have often been on show at the Parker Gallery in London. He lived in Farnham, Surrey, where he died on the 18th July 1979 aged 91. He was a very prolific artist. This magnificent set of watercolors, all signed by the artist, depict three mighty clipper ships. The first watercolor depicts the clipper ship “Superior” sailing on calm, icy waters, with a snowy mountainous background. The second watercolor painting depicts the ship “Pequod” from the classic tale “Moby Dick”; the ship is being attacked by the giant whale, while its’ crew member escape in a life boat. The third watercolor painting depicts the ship “H.M.S. Culloden”was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built at Deptford Dockyard, England. She was the fourth warship to be named after the Battle of Culloden, which took place in Scotland in 1746 and saw the defeat of the Jacobite rising. Each watercolor painting is masterfully executed, and vividly colored, with precise attention to detail. The watercolors are all professionally matted and framed. The watercolors are all in very good antique condition, with very minimal wear from being on display. Frames are in good condition, with minor wear and scuffing. The matting of each watercolor has minor toning from age. The frame of the “HMS Culloden” watercolor is missing part of the gilded edge molding on the right side and bottom left corner. This beautiful three-piece set will make a truly wonderful addition to any Tufnell/Maritime watercolor collection! Add instant elegance and refinement to any interior with this set of three watercolors. Fresh to the market!
