Today we are offering for sale this antique, first edition book “Histoire des Abenakis Depuis 1605 Jusqu’A Nos Jours” by L’Abbe (Father) J. A. (Joseph Anselm) Maurault (1819-1871). It is written in French. This book is about the Abenaki Native Americans. The Abenaki are a Native American tribe and First Nation. They are one of the Algonquian-speaking peoples of northeastern North America. The Abenakis are original natives of Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. After European colonists arrived, many Abenakis fled to Canada or moved in with neighboring tribes. Today, Abenaki Indians live on two reservations in Quebec and scattered around New England. Abenakis in the United States do not have a reservation. This book is beautifully bound with a tooled leather spine and marbleized cover and title pages. It was published in 1866 by “L’Atelier Typographique de la Gazette de Sorel”. The title page is embossed with the emblem for the “Instutition de Sourdes-Muettes – Montreal” (Institute for the Deaf and Mute of Montreal), founded by Sister Marie de Bon Secours of the Sisters of Providence in 1851. The institute closed doors in 1974 (last picture shows the institute, the large building in middle). The book features over 600 pages. In good antique condition, with wear commensurate with age. The leather covering on the spine and cover is slightly cracked and loose. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a great piece of Victorian literature and also a piece of Native American and Canadian Quebecois history. Fresh to the market!
