Description

Here we have a wonderful print of the c.1900 painting titled The Fallowfield Hunt, Breakfast at the Three Pigeons, by the noted equestrian and ‘sporting’ artist, Cecil Aldin (1870-1935), from Aldin’s series of five Fallowfield Hunt paintings. This is perhaps a rare or early variant print: in all other examples of this print we’ve compared it to, the hunters can be seen wearing red jackets, while in this particular example the jackets are a rosy shade of peach-orange. We are not sure when this print was made, however the wear to the frame and the exceedingly high quality of the inks and worksmanship suggest it has some definite age to it.

This image depicts a humorous scene, with five hunters eating a rushed breakfast at the “Three Pigeons.” In the background, through the inn’s open door, we see a bustling scene, with a pack of eager bloodhounds and several other members of this hunting party all pensively awaiting the dining hunters’ participation.

It may be the case that some of the men outside are hired hands (huntsmen) and are cajoling the ‘landed gentry’ types to ‘stop feasting and start hunting,’ whilst their dogs and horses are all ‘chomping at the bit.’ In his haste to placate the restless dogs and huntsmen, one of these diners may have thrown his plates on the ground and tipped his chair over, as his companions make a display of not being so easily moved.

Cecil Aldin’s signature / trademark is in the bottom right corner of the printed surface, partially obscured by the frame. The print comes in an antique wooden frame that has been painted black, with a plaque nailed to the bottom that says “The Breakfast.”

Print is in very good condition with no rips or tears. Some printed areas and minor flaws are obscured behind the frame’s edge; please see provided images of the print with the frame removed. Frame shows some slight losses in the black finish and the titular placard at bottom has some patination, consistent with true antiquity.
