Description

Here we have an exquisite oversized 1892 photogravure rendering, credited to D.H. Anderson, of 3 pivotal navy admirals in the American Civil War: Samuel Francis DuPont (seated on left), David Farragut (standing), and David Dixon Porter (seated on right). Their burdened expressions speak to the many mortal decisions they had no doubt made: for good or for bad, these 3 United States Naval Officers had significant bearing on the outcome of that bloodiest of U.S. conflicts. (And, to date, the only protracted war in the history of our republic fought on home soil.) One can scarcely imagine three people (or any single person) alive today with so much on their conscience! These larger-than-life figures are well-represented in this huge, framed rendering. Having them on your wall might be the next best thing to having them stop by… in the flesh… for some rounds of cognac & blackjack!

This print includes a sort of ‘watermark’ by the artist, which reads “Copyright 1892, by D. H. Anderson,” within the image near the left-side edge. David H. Anderson was a celebrated photographer of his day, operating out of New York City.

The name of the publisher is delicately scribed above the image at the top left border (see provided image of otherwise uneventful top left corner), which we’ve gathered (via 17x DCAM images, which follow) to read: “Published by C. Klackner,1892. 5 E.17th St., N.Y.” Charles Klackner was a curative fine arts print publisher active in New York and London, between 1882 and 1909.

The old, sturdy oak frame is ready to hang, with negligible traces of time. The frame has a handsome, 3/8″ exposed gilded trim between the wood and glass; note one flaw in this border on the left side near the top (see last 2 detail images). No flaws in the old poured glass pane, or the print. We surmise from close inspection of the provided 17x DCAM images that this example is likely a photogravure etched print. Please pardon that in some of our images, the silhouette of the camera is reflected in the large glass.

This is a very rare print indeed and what a delight to find it in such excellent condition! We could only find one single auction record for one from a few years ago on-line and it sold for quite a bit more than we’re asking so we’d suggest that you go ahead and find that auction result record and then not wait too long before the next guy does also does and beats you to the buy!
